Term Faculty Appointments

We hire faculty into term appointments for a specified period of time for courses taught in the School of Social Work. Sessional Lecturers teach and/or perform related duties, for a period of less than 12 months. Lecturers teach and perform related duties which may also include faculty administrative responsibilities. They are hired for a period of one, two or three years.

CURRENT POSTINGS

The School of Social Work requires teaching in person at UBC Okanagan Campus for the following course sections in Winter Term 1, from September 1st to December 31st, 2024. The term teaching dates are September 3rd to December 6th. The ideal candidate will hold an MSW or PhD in Social Work or a related discipline with relevant university teaching experience. The compensation rate for a 3 credit course is $9,559.12 per period ($2,389.78 per month for a full term).

  • SOCW 512: Theories and Interventions for Clinical Social Work (two sections)
    Advances students’ understanding of major theoretical frameworks and treatment modalities for clinical and direct social work practice and their relevance to and application within the planned change process.
    3 credits, in-person, currently scheduled for Tuesdays 11-2 and Wednesdays 11-2.

 

  • SOCW 514: Diversity and Critical Reflexive Practice (two sections)
    Meanings, dynamics, and impacts of diversity in social work practice. Students examine their own identities and social locations and a range of theories and orientations to inclusion and social justice.
    3 credits, in-person, currently scheduled for Wednesdays 2-5 and Thursdays 11-2.

 

  • SOCW 517: Social Work and Indigenous Peoples in Canada (three sections)
    Overview of historical and current issues confronting social work with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit individuals, families and communities within Canada including but not limited to child protection; critical assessment of theories for social work practice with Indigenous peoples.
    3 credits, in-person, currently scheduled for Mondays 2-5, Wednesdays 2-5, and Thursdays 11-2. Proven track record of teaching Indigenous courses that focus on the issues faced by Indigenous Peoples in Canada today is preferred.

 

  • SOCW 551: Advanced Clinical Social Work Theory and Practice (three sections)
    Integrates theory and practice with attention to relational principles and a complex analysis of personal and social problems. Consideration of the dynamic interaction between the individual and the social world, and the possibility of intervention at multiple levels.
    3 credits, in-person, currently scheduled for Mondays 2-5, Tuesdays 11-2, and Thursdays 5-8.

 

  • SOCW 553: Research Knowledge and Evidence in Clinical Social Work Practice (two sections)
    Knowledge and skills for utilizing empirical evidence to guide clinical social work practice.
    3 credits, in-person, currently scheduled for Mondays 11-2, and Wednesdays 5-8.

 

  • SOCW 554: Mental Health and Mental Illness (one section)
    Explores relevant mental health issues to social work practice in a broad range of settings. Critically examines social work’s role in providing effective, evidence-based, theoretically sound interventions and treatments.
    3 credits, in-person, currently scheduled for Thursdays 2-5.
